Of all coats, the pea coat is the sailor’s garment par excellence. Only true sailors will know, for example, why it’s double-breasted. Because, when on watch on deck, it can be closed on the left or right, depending on whether the wind is coming from port or starboard, thus preventing cold air from entering the garment. Mystery solved. <\/p>\n

First used by European sailors, the pea coat was adopted by the US Navy in the late 19th century in its best-known form, the Pea Coat<\/em>. To this day, its best-known incarnation remains the 10-button US Navy coat used from the Second World War through to the Korean War. Two rows of 5 buttons marked with an anchor, two side pockets to keep hands warm (the pocket bottoms are in beige corduroy for added comfort), a wide, very masculine and elegant collar. All cut from hard-wearing boiled wool cloth, made more beautiful every winter by the patina of time. <\/p>\n

A strong character in the navy, he went on to make a name for himself on the silver screen: The Three Days of the Condor<\/em>, Serpico<\/em> and The Gunboat of the Yangtze<\/em> are all examples of his elegance with Robert Redford, Al Pacino and Steve McQueen.<\/p>\n
