5 June 2023With year-round sunshine and magnificent islets in the world’s largest lagoon, New Caledonia is one of the leading destinations for nautical tourism.
There are numerous charter companies, such as Dream Yacht Charter, as well as individuals wishing to skipper their own monohull or catamaran. Numerous shuttles also operate to take day-trippers to the islets, each more beautiful than the last.
Exploration by Cédric Bourgat, manager of The Yachter, in New Caledonia

For a few weeks, Cédric Bourgat, Captain and Manager of The Yachter, went to New Caledonia to assess the benefits of deploying The Yachter training courses for future captains in the region.
On site, Cédric took the opportunity to coach one of The Yachter’s trainees, Philippe, owner of a Catana 42, who wants to obtain the Brevet Master 200 GT in order to take tourists on cruises and day trips for whale watching.
Every year, between July and September, these exceptional mammals come to give birth and raise their calves, before continuing their journey to Australia. The spectacle is remarkable.
Strong tourism potential, but few skippers recruited
Despite New Caledonia’s strong tourism potential, charter companies are finding it extremely difficult to recruit qualified captains. In fact, it is extremely difficult for people undergoing professional retraining, or shipowners wishing to develop a hobby, to pass their 200 captaincy.

It’s also very difficult to attract captains from mainland France. The President of the Nautical Professionals’ Union claims to be able to guarantee 300 days’ work for an experienced captain, with comfortable remuneration, whereas in many parts of the world, business is seasonal.
The right training solution
The e-learning training offer for the Yachting Master 200 and 500 GT is therefore also an excellent opportunity for all captains in New Caledonia who wish to carry out their activity in full compliance with regulations.
