Duration of The Yachter captain's course Course duration

Between 6 months and 1 year,in e-learning at your own pace, depending on the level of knowledge you've already acquired, and following The Yachter method and recommended work schedules.

Examination period captain 200 captain 500 Examination period

2 examination sessions at an officially approved Belgian center: April and October (limited number of places).

The Yachter's trainers have French, English or Belgian qualifications and are fully conversant with these training courses.

Upgrade the level and skills of candidates whose experience as a yachtsman or professional qualifies them for the Captain Master 500 GT (Master Commercial Yachting 500 GT) licence of competency, which enables them to work as professional yachtsmen on sail and/or motor yachts.

Prerequisites for Yacht Captain training Prerequisites

- Belgian Master 200 GT or French Master 200.
- English: intermediate level required.
- Sailing experience: the candidate must have an experienced level.

4. Offshore license (optional)

5. Advanced navigation: course, currents, tides, cartography, anchors, revision of colreg lights, distance calculation, collision course.


6. Overall understanding of travel plan


7. Rescue at sea medical assistance


8. Advanced meteorology


 9. Electronics: Electrical aids, AIS Radar introduction

10. Bridge procedure: All bridge procedures, normal procedures, routines, emergencies, distress, dockside, at anchor, underway...


11. Maneuvers: towing assistance to ships, maneuver overhaul


12. Helm orders, maritime vocabulary and the role of the Captain


13. Training Book

An optional 5-day module is offered 3 times a year in Marseille. It consists of 4 days of theory review and exercises and 1 day of practice on the same vessel you will be using for the exam (sail or power). This module is a priority for students with a low level of English.

At the end of each module, you take an assessment quiz. Some modules also include a corrected exercise. At the end of all modules, you take a final quiz to validate your theoretical training. For practical training, you will be assessed in person.
