The Yachter offers a hybrid e-learning course to prepare you for the Master Commercial Yachting 500 GT Captain's diploma. A diploma enabling you to become Captain of a sailing and/or motor yacht of up to up to 50 m, within 200 minutes of shelter.

The Yachter also offers you the option of accessing the Captain 500 unlimited to navigate up to 50m, without any limit with the coasts.

The Yachter offers an e-learning course to prepare you for the exams for the Master Commercial Yachting 500 GT certificate. A diploma enabling you to become Captain of a sailing or motor yacht of up to up to 50 m, within 200 minutes of shelter.

Prerequisites for Yacht Captain training METHOD AND ROUTE

The Yachter method is based on flexible hybrid training, combining distance learning, individualized coaching and face-to-face practical assessments.

Depending on your profile, your preparation can be supplemented by additional training courses (theoretical or practical), as well as specific refresher courses, particularly in maritime English.

The Master 500 GT Commercial Yachting certificate of competence is issued in accordance with regulation II/3 of the STCW Convention.

Public concerned captain training Target audience

This training course is aimed at professional sea captains who already hold a title complying with regulation II/3 of the STCW Convention, such as :

  • A Master 200 GT Commercial Yachting from the Kingdom of Belgium
  • A French Captain 200, with or without Sailing module or Yacht module
  • An English MCA Master of Yacht 200 GT title
  • Or any other international 200 GT Captain's certificate complying with the requirements of STCW rule II/3

Duration of The Yachter captain's course Preparation time

Preparation generally lasts from 6 months to 1 year, depending on the time you have available.

The pace is flexible and supervised, to ensure effective progress towards the required level.

Examination period captain 200 captain 500 Examination period

Training courses and certification exams are organized in partnership with an approved Belgian training center, generally at the rate of 1 to 2 complete sessions per year:

  • Between October and the end of December
  • Between January and May

Some stages of the course require a physical presence, notably for practical training and access to the Radar simulator.

Preparation and training sessions can be offered in different areas, particularly in the south of France, depending on modules and availability.

Additional STCW-specific training courses (CQALI, CAEERS, EM-2 and CGO) can be taken at the centers of your choice, depending on your location.

As the number of places is extremely limited, registration for the exam sessions is subject to prior validation of your existing credentials by The Yachter.

The aim is to help you develop your skills as a captain and prepare you for the Master Commercial Yachting 500 GT certificate.

This certificate of competency enables you to carry out a professional activity in sailing and/or motor yachting, in compliance with international regulations.

The Yachter's teaching team is made up of experienced professionals who hold international patents issued by Belgium, France and the UK.

Their expertise in the various training courses enables them to provide precise support, adapted to the requirements of international standards.

 

Training course
Master Commercial Yachting 500 GT

The course is structured in four progressive stages, combining theory and practical preparation:

Officer Of Watch (OOW) 500 module - Theoretical training

Review of the fundamentals and acquisition of additional skills: navigation, international conventions, COLREGs, weather, tides, maritime English and watchkeeping. This course gradually prepares you for the training courses and certification exams held at an approved center, in line with international STCW standards.

Radar/ARPA module - Theoretical and practical simulator preparation

Radar configuration, gain settings, EBL and VRM. Training for operational situations: Radar positioning, use of Radar to determine risk of collision. Efficient use of true and relative tracks and vectors.

Master 500 module

In-depth command skills: stability, ship management, onboard documentation, towing and salvage, regulations and insurance, charter contracts.

Module Final Assessment

Production of a voyage plan of around 150-200NM in accordance with SOLAS regulations. Maintenance and validation of the mandatory Cadet Training Book for 500GT officers and captains.

Intensive course (optional)

An intensive 4-day course is offered several times a year in Toulon or on the coast between Nice and Marseille. It is devoted to targeted theoretical revision and consolidation of knowledge in preparation for exams.

It is particularly recommended for candidates who have little time to prepare remotely, or who wish to reinforce their skills in chart work, tidal calculations, COLREG and meteorology.

Once your level has been validated by The Yachter's training team, you take the OOW 500 exams at one of our partner training centers.

This face-to-face session lasts around 4 days.

RADAR/ARPA theoretical and practical examination

This stage validates your operational skills in a real-life situation in all aspects of Radar use.

This part will take the form of a day of theory, either remote or in Belgium, followed by 2 days in a Radar simulator (simulator in Antwerp, Belgium), during which you will gradually be taken through the relevant and precise use of Radar in different scenarios (day, night or in restricted visibility, for positioning, target detection and anti-collision strategies).

The assessment validates command and management skills, and also covers regulatory and insurance aspects. This training will be delivered remotely over 5 days.
