To become a yacht captain, you first need to gain experience: either, if you already own a boat, by stepping up the frequency of your sea outings and varying your sailing experiences, or by working for a few months on board different types of boats. You can start out as a sailor or deckhand to learn the rudiments of navigation, safety, maintenance and boat management.
The different captain’s licenses to comply with legislation
Yacht captains must hold a valid certificate issued by their country’s maritime authority. Requirements vary according to the size and destination of the boat, as well as the type of navigation you wish to undertake. To obtain a license, you must take courses and pass exams.
Here is a list of common certifications required to become a captain:
- Pleasure boating license: This is a basic certification that allows you to sail small pleasure boats. The requirements for this license vary from country to country.
- Certificat de matelotage: This is a certification attesting that you have basic skills in navigation, safety and boat maintenance. It is often required to work as a deckhand or sailor aboard a yacht.
- The Captain 200 certificate: This is a basic certification for yacht captains, allowing them to sail on boats under 24 meters.
- Captain 500 certificate: This certification allows you to sail on boats under 35 meters in length, with a crew of up to 6.
- Captain’s Certificate 3000: This certification allows you to sail on boats over 35 meters long and up to 200 tons, with a larger crew.
